Yes, in Update manager settings automatic checking for updates can be
turned off.
But then it after few weeks will display an icon, which will tell that
update information is outdated, so what I do for that is uncheck all
the software sources (repositories) in Synaptic package manager and
let the update manager check for updates. And now the update list is
empty, because there are no repositories, but the update manager is
still happy for next few weeks. Of course, the option of ignoring that
icon is totally fine.
