It is generally safe as the updater has been trained to ignore kernel 
updates, which would indeed render emc/linuxcnc in operable.  I have been 
installing all the updates as they become available, and ANAICT, its all 
been fine.

Bear in mind though, that if you actually go wandering through the software 
listing synaptic can show you, you will find newer kernels, but you must 
resist the "Oh look, a pony" syndrome.  I haven't found anything else that 
seems particularly dangerous though.

I have the livecd installed on my laptop that I often use as a code 
generator, and as a previewer, but rather than running linuxcnc on the 
lappy, I ssh -Y into the actual machine and just use the lappy for a remote 
display.  For that to work I had to install the latest kernel on the lappy 
else the wifi didn't work that I use for the remote linkage.  On the lappy, 
the ability to run linuxcnc on it is moot as it has no parport facilities 
anyway.

To summarize, as long as you don't install any new kernels that don't have 
an RTAI extension, you should be good to go.
