yes and no :)
I'm not sure if your live cd was 8.04 or 10.04 so :
If you get a message that a new DISTRIBUTION is available do not accept it.
only 8.04 and 10.04 can be used with the realtime version of linuxcnc.
other updates are fine - other then kernel updates.
Kernel updates change the order of which kernel get loaded at start up.
the new one is tacked on to the top of the list so then your box loads
with the wrong kernel for linuxcnc's realtime.
Which means the computer works fine except (realtime) linuxcnc will not run.
but you can choose the kernel when you start the computer.
Mine lists all the options probably because I dual booted with windows.
I think if you hold the shift key down at startup the list will show
then you can choose the proper kernel (rtai )
There are various options to either fix the kernel choice (you would have to
fix it
after each kernel update), make the computer wait till you choose, or I think
you can
make it always choose a certain kernel.
Whether this is worth it I'll leave up to you.
In my case I accept all updates and I choose my kernel ( or on occasion windows
gasp)
at start up.
