Charles,
metric tapers of any diameter (size 30 to 80, for machine tools) all 
have the same angle, which is (alpha/2)=1.432 degrees . Morse tapers, 
however, all have different angles alpha/2:
Morse   angle degrees
0         1.491
1         1.429
2         1.431
3         1.438
4         1.488
5         1.507
6         1.493

I can't see any logic behind these number except the best excuse of them 
all: "historically grown". Maybe it was a trick from early trade unions 
to keep their workers in business that would otherwise have been fired - 
changing the measures for each cone would keep more workers in job.
