Yeah, this is not the most elegant solution!  But, the customer already 
HAD the
Gecko 320 drives running in open loop step/servo mode, but wanted encoder
feedback to the PC.  Using the Gecko Interface is cheaper than replacing the
drives with my PWM servo amps.  And, still, you might not have totally
reliable runaway detection even with that, but the saturated PID detection
OUGHT to work there.

Well, not really elegant, but I think it would work, and not require months
of firmware design.
