These PacSci motors went REAL cheap because there was no encoder on them. I bought some Avago encoders with commutation from Avnet. You have to be sure they send you both parts (the glass disc and the read head), and you have to order the encoder with the right number of poles on the commutation. These encoders are available with 3/8" bore, but the PacSci motors I got have a larger shaft at the back end. So, I will have to do some fancy setup to turn the shafts on the lathe with the motor riding on the shaft.
Setting the commutation is not that difficult. The latest procedure I have seen is to put current between two motor terminals and then align the encoder disc until it is on the edge between two codes of the Hall signals. Not exactly sure which code to set it for, but I think i can figure it out.
