So you're on a MSWindows-based computer? You can always install Ubuntu as a dualboot OS without diddling with the disk partitions; see the Ubuntu website concerning the "Windows Installer". Or you can install Ubuntu as a virtual host using, eg., VirtualBox, in your existing Windows OS (get better control and performance by installing Ubuntu as the real host and Windows as a virtual host!). I have used all of these methods without any significant problem on desktops and laptops. More expeditiously, try the web-based IRC client http://webclient.freenode.net I can't explain what you are experiencing with your existing client.
