So you're on a MSWindows-based computer? You can always install Ubuntu
as a dualboot OS without diddling with the disk partitions; see the
Ubuntu website concerning the "Windows Installer". Or you can install
Ubuntu as a virtual host using, eg., VirtualBox, in your existing
Windows OS (get better control and performance by installing Ubuntu as
the real host and Windows as a virtual host!). I have used all of these
methods without any significant problem on desktops and laptops.

More expeditiously, try the web-based IRC client
http://webclient.freenode.net

I can't explain what you are experiencing with your existing client.

Regards,
Kent
