Erik: I'm not sure what you are asking. What users-list software are you referring to? I suspect you are actually asking about details in the headers of the messages that form this thread. According to RFC 2822 (and others), a reply should contain a Reference: header and/or an In-reply-to: header containing message-id(s) of previous messages in the thread. Mail agents (e.g., Thunderbird, etc.) are supposed to use this message-id, not the subject line, to identify message-membership in the thread. With this scheme one can change the subject line entirely and still maintain the thread. Unfortunately, scanning the headers of a number of messages sent to this list shows some of us are using mail agents that don't honor this RFC requirement and break the threads.
