Jeremy: Pay more attention to the backlash, I have cut bearing pockets on my toy mill where the direction reversals at the 4 corners of the circle were not visible even after the bearings, some 2.5" diameter had been driven into the press fit and extracted twice as I was attempting to line up the grease hole in the race with the fitting I had installed. Due to wear in the nuts & screws as the job runs, I've found that about .0001" extra in the backlash setting comes in handy. I have ball bearing thrust washers in the xy hubs of my micromill with the big tables kits, preloaded a bit so the only backlash is in the nut. I didn't have those installed when I cut the bearing blocks for the new Z drive and the backlash in both directions was over 13 thou. Half that was in the thrust hubs. It can be done. But you may have to do it all in dig direction & put a fresh mill in for the last 5 thou of the cuts.
