KDE 4 is now working quite well, but after how long since the 4.0 realese ?
And in my opinion it has not yet reached the fonctionnalities KDE 3.5
had, and it is always considerably slower. Yes it offers some "cool"
graphic stuff 3.5 had not... Like Linus, I switched to gnome when kde
3.5 has been abandonned.
I think the problem is the same we now have with gnome 2/ gnome 3 :
Sometimes, they think there is a need to change everything, and it needs
a long time to get to the point they where wih the older stuff.
I think in this process, M$ is better. They did the same thing with win
3.11 -> win 95, or Xp->7, but when they did the switch, the new
interface had all the fonctionnalities the previous had. Took some time
for the user to get used to the new one, but they CAN get used to the
new one.
And also something important : old apps where still usable with the new
system, at least for a reasonable amount of time.

In the linux world, when a switch like that happens (for a user
interface or for a system library), the new version is always still
something I personally consider as a beta version, without most of the
"must have" features. So you just CANNOT be used to the new one, as it
is just not possible to do very simple things like sorting programs by
categories ans create a launcher on the desktop...
And also the old apps cannot be used with the new system, or you need to
recompile them for yourself, and solve a large amount of problems with
the new libraries. And be happy if you can solve them :/

just my two cents...
