try Mint 13's Cinnamon. Its less annoying.
not that I've used it much.
Apparently it can be used in Ubuntu 12.04

Actually I think we should consider switching to Mint.
It uses uses Ubuntu repositories but is made with 'doing stuff'
in mind...
