The issue is not so much with the building of the firmwares, but that
there is no obvious path for Mesa module updates into the LinuxCNC
code repository. (And the code bases and build process seem t have
rather diverged)

I briefly considered the idea of an on-demand buildbot where a
stepconf-like web interface could be used to configure modules and
pinout. But it looked hard.
