I actually have a little sherline lathe retrofit that works this
way.  It has pittman motors run by L298.  I haven't used it recently
but years ago it was a fixture at the CNC Workshops, demoing (the
new!) threadcutting features.

You can just use the up/down mode (pwmdir = FALSE), see the
pluto_servo manpage.

But before you do *anything* else, see if you can get the pluto
firmware loaded and get it working.  The plutos are notoriously
flaky and totally fail to work on some (the majority of?) parallel
ports.

No way would I use one for my lathe if I was starting today, even if
it was free.  There are too many good inexpensive choices from mesa.
