The bit in this debate that is ignored is the consumption of batteries. All rechargeable batteries have a cycle life. If you take the cycle life times the capacity you get a total WH deliverable from the battery. If you have the price of the batteries you get a cost in the form WH/$
Assuming that charging is free - one can run the numbers and know that battery powered cars are not at all practical. The market is driven by people that want to feel good - ( or superior? ) to alleviate their guilt of existence. Thus there is a real market. The other little detail is that electric cars actually consume MORE fuel per energy delivered to the road than ICE cars. There are losses at every conversion and transmission step. The latest Tesla work is on air batteries - which by definition are non rechargeable - thus a specialized fuel - reality has a way of creeping in - in the long term. If all this leaves you depressed that electric cars really don't solve any energy problem and your guilt is growing - you might want to take a look at http://www.vhemt.org/ and do your part to save the planet.
