That brush-holder and end bearing thing is a bakelite casting with 8 'ribs' to support the end bearing, with the brush holder cast in at 45 degrees, so its 45 degrees to the center of the poles, or 45 degrees to the gap between them. Moving is not impossible, but I'd just about have to machine a new one. Out of micarta, I have some of that, 1/2" thick that I use for zero clearance inserts on my table saw. Only about a 100,000% improvement over the factory piece they sell for $29.00. :) I'll look again tomorrow, but first, it seems the brush holder should sit in the center of the pole pieces? I may be able to make a dam of sorts, but in that event, it seems the through bolts, which pass between the pole pieces, should be 90 degrees from the brush holders, right? I'll see if I can get a decent pix tomorrow, but as it sits, the web of material where the bolt would need to come through, is almost exactly the thickness of the bolt. It may be that the bolts are long enough to reach a 16 gauge 7078 alu cap over the whole thing, which would allow the bolt to come up right beside the rib at 90 degrees, putting it off by perhaps 10 degrees as opposed to 45, but that cap will impede the air flow a bit too. We'll have to see what tomorrow brings. ATM I am about shot, been tearing a tiller down & the accumulated years (78) are calling me a wuss. MTD tiller, you have to remove everything from the gear case before you can split it to work on it, and one wheel is still stuck, on some extensions I made to widen its tread so it could be turned around on what some folks who don't know any better, would call flat ground. I guess it is, to a West Virginian. :) Around here, a good farm is one you can farm both sides of. ;) So I have everything off but one wheel. Seems that when I bored for the axle extension, I should have bored another 5 thou bigger so it would have worked some as the wheel turned, preventing it from rusting solid. In 7 years, its froze tight, and PB Blaster is trying to loosen it. Probably is going to need a few heat/cool cycles too but my heat is a hand held propane torch & not really sudden enough to do it right. Sigh.
