Yes, look at the "In-Reply-To:" header line (your email program might not display it by default, but it's there). Some mail readers use this line to sort messages into threads (again, not necessarily by default-- you might have to change a setting somewhere). I'm kind of amazed that there's no such thing as a forum that's bidirectionally gatewayed to a mailing list. It's not as if it would be difficult.
