I don't know if I would say it is unusable, but it is really annoying.  We had 
our gantry (http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?GantryPlasmaMachine) set 
up with it for a while in the beginning but ended up using trivkins and never 
looked back.  The trivkins config files are linked at the bottom of the wiki.

We had problems with multiple joints on the Y axis.  We had odd "jumps" during 
homing, you had to be ever so careful not to move Y when in joint mode or only 
one motor would move because each joint is controlled separately.  We had a 
couple other nagging problems (which I don't now recall) and I had begun to 
compile a list of the specific issues planning to post them but my list got 
"cleaned up" and I couldn't locate it.
