I think there is an argument for doing that _and_ running a cut simulator.
You feed the CAM system with a smooth shape, that spits out G-code, then
you can run a simulator and see what shape you will really get, with the
lumps and bumps and missed bits and gouges to bits that shouldn't have been
touched.
You might then, for example, decide on a smaller stepover, or to run the
finishing cuts in a different direction, for example.
