We've been focusing on Ubuntu since back in the Breezy days because it had a better user experience than Debian. In the early days of Ubuntu and up through Lucid or so, Ubuntu was just a more polished, easy-to-use Debian. We want to make LinuxCNC as easy to use as possible, including for people whose main interest is machining rather than hacking on software or resolving dependency problems or boot loader hiccups. That said, i agree that Ubuntu's been going off into the weeds a bit lately, and i may be time to start looking for other reliable, easy-to-use, good-looking distros to support. We have good debian packaging infrastructure up already, so distros based on debs are going to be quicker & easier to support than others. I've heard good things about Debian Weezy, and about Mint.
