Finally did that, but then discovered the screenshot had grabbed the full lcnc screen. So I fired up gimp & cut the outer edges off it, but regardless of the edit or crop functions I have tried, ALL saved images remain the same size as the original, with 100+k of white space included. I like gimp for all it CAN do, but it makes the simple stuff, like saving just the active portion of an image into a major PIMA. ATM I have several "cropped" images saved, but the cropped area is still there. Image size is just under 200k. It seems like I should be able to get the png below 100k if I could make the crops stick. Help message posted to gimp list.
