OK, in gimp, select the box selection tool at top left of 
the toolbox, then
select the area you want.  right click in the graphical 
window and select
edit/cut.  then left click outside the selected region to 
clear the selection.
Then, select edit/clear, then edit/paste, and drag the upper
right corner to the upper right corner of the window.  then left
click outside the region to clear the selection.  then select
image/autocrop to remove the blank surrounding.

Yes, this is a lot of clicking, and there probably is a 
better way
to do it, but this works for me.

After the autocrop, you can rescale the image if you want, 
before
saving it.
