Opaque, down to about a 1.45" radius?  These are about 2.66" in diameter, 
and need a 1.067" hole machined thru to fit the spindle threads OD.

Looks like I haven't bought a new spindle of blanks recently.  No black 
dummies in my collection.  But that sure sounds like a good idea. Next 
time I go by the blanks at someplace that carries them, I'll sure check.
