Hi Rick, What is the printer? I have HP printers and for them there is the hplip package that gives official HP support for their printers. It gives access to the scanning and printing features of the multifunction printers, and works over the network.
For other brands, I'm not experienced. The last time I set up a non-HP printer in Linux was probably back in 2003.
