I try to keep the  world right-side-up by a quick reality check: to a 
decent
approximation 40 thou and 1 mm are equivalent.

I worked in metric all my life ... weight, volume, etc but not distance.
Since most of what I do now is related to pre-1920 guns I reverse engineer
in imperial. I can think in mm but it takes a bit of effort.
