This last week I have been doing some building work at my parents
house. For reasons that I am not clear on, I did all the plasterboard
(drywall) work in metric and the wood work in imperial.

When machining I guess in imperial and measure in metric.

A useful dodge for machining on a manual lathe in the wrong units:
Set a digital micrometer (or caliper) to the exact size you want. Zero
it, then switch to the lathe units. The micrometer now reads how many
native-units of the machine you are from your required (non-native)
size.
