this is how I configure it without using NetworkNamager.

auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wpa-conf /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

--- wpa_supplicant.conf ---
network={
ssid="myssid"
scan_ssid=1
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
psk="mypassphrase"
}
