This is NOT a good environment for wireless.  All that 
electrical machinery can produce a lot
of noise that can radiate even up to wireless frequencies.  
I've been in industrial envrironments  (mostly computer and 
data acquisition gear, not machine tools) where I couldn't 
get reliable wireless from 15 feet within line of sight!

This almost certainly will help the problem.  In a number of 
Linux systems, you can get the wireless toolbar icon to 
display signal strength.  If you see this bouncing up and 
down from minute to minute, that is an indication of 
interference.
Closer ought to make things work better.
