I think that the + / - buttons in Axis basically issue G-code "S" commands. Can you describe the behaviour that you want? Do you want the spindle speed to stay at the same speed high when you release the joypad, or do you want it to return to the original speed? Have a look at the spindle pins in halui: http://www.linuxcnc.org/docs/html/man/man1/halui.1.html Some of those should give you what you want. Depending on the actual behaviour you want you will need either want to use the increase / decrease or spindle-override pins.
