I've been running two 3-phase only VFDs here in my shop for 
years with no issues.  The first one, I didn't even KNOW you 
were supposed to derate it for single phase, so I've been 
using a 1 HP VFD with a 1 HP motor!  It will probably 
shorten its life, but then it is a home shop, so it looks 
like it could outlive me!
(There are a FEW that have lost-phase detection on them, but 
rare in the smaller sizes.)
