My first impression is noise getting into the serial data stream. But 
then you said reflashing the 7i77 fixed it.  My gut says that whatever 
you did, like removeing the card to reflash it, may have refreshed a bad 
connection.  I'd start by making sure the single point grounding is good 
by inspecting it with an o-scope. That may not be it, but its the first 
thing I'd check.  And while I was checking that, any IDC ribbon cable 
connections would get another squeeze in the vice. At nearly crush it 
pressures with a thin sheet of wood to protect it from the vices gripper 
pattern on the faces of the jaws.  One of my 5i25 to bob cables failed 
in a similar manner a year ago, and it appeared I could have slipped a 
piece of onion skin paper in the gap. A trip to the vice fixed it right 
up, and its still working.

Another thought, before you reflash, would be to do a verify first just 
to see if its gotten forgetfull.
