I like free open source software too. In fact I finally switched from Eagle to Kicad for schematics and PCB design, IN the past Eagle worked and Kicad as a development process. Kicad caught up because CERN (the physics lab in Europe) adopted and funded Kicad.
But open source CAD/CAM is just not there yet. You simply can not draw a part and then send it to a four axis milling machine using open source software. When that is possible I'll do it. Yes Autodesk will ask you to pay a for Fusion. It is not free for everyone so you don't have to be suspicious of them charging for it one day. They are already asking for money. But it's free for hobby, student and small startups. They have a sustainable business model, charge a subscription to those who can afford it and don't bother asking for money from those who don't have money. What FreeCAD needs is someone to adopt it like KiCad, someone with a few million dollars to spend.
