For much of the sort of thing that I make, a bull-nose cutter (ball nose with a flat section on the end) would be ideal. They can do nearly anything that a ball-nose can, with the additional ability to make flat horizontal surfaces.
My CAM packages all know how to work with them, but I don't actually seem to be able to see them on sale anywhere.
