Well, in that event, a 4 wire setup, and gold plated probes, can get you to the short pretty fast. :) I have an old, old, Fluke probably closer to 60 yo than 50, very accurate, but a pain in the butt to use as its relays to do a successive approximation bridge balance. It displays the answer on nixie tubes for about a second, then starts a hunt from scratch again, and all that time its hunting, the nixie tubes are displaying the test values. With all the relays clanking along its about 30 seconds to a new, 5 digit reading thats displayed for that 1 second. I've not actually used it in close to 30 years. But it can do a 4 wire resistance measurement. Fired up today, I'd let it sit and rattle the contacts to clean them for about a day, maybe longer. Or maybe not, the relays are C.P.Clares with mercury wetted contacts IIRC. They ought to be good even at this late date. That leaves the psu and nixie tubes to have failed over time. I don't even know where it is in the basement as we had a drainage system and some wall re-enforcement's ($12k worth) put in about 2 years back and we've not put everything back where it was yet... They dug a small ditch in the concrete floor, all the way around, put in a small plastic liner that drains into a sump with an automatic pump into the french drains. About half a ton of concrete dust to vacuum off stuff as we pick it up out a midden heap in the middle of the floor. I haven't even pushed a wooden shelving unit about 20' long back against the wall because I want to put a layer of 2" styro on the walls for insulation. But thats against the front wall, which now has a 4" I beam brace every 4 feet as the wall was cracking, and they are ever so slowly straightening the wall, about 1/4" of in-bow was pushed back in the last year.
