I think that depends on if its powered field, or a PM field. For PM
fields, I'd want to make a shunt in the shape and size of the armature,
counter bored on one end to fit over the armature shaft and windings,
out of magnetically soft steel, so that the end cap can be removed, and
this "magnetic shunt" can follow the armature as it is removed and it
remain stuck to the PM field poles while the armature is on the bench
getting its bearings serviced. It gets pushed back out as the armature
is re-inserted.

It may be less tom-foolery by just removeing the end caps and making
whatever is needed to pull and push the bearings while the armature is
still inside the field poles. The motors maker has such tools to do
exactly that if the price is reasonable. Including the best quality
bearing, I'd say anything under the $50 to $75 range per end is
semi-reasonable. Remember that you have to be lox clean magnetically
while its open else you may reassemble it with magnetic filings in the
pole to armature gaps. This is very bad karma for the motor as that
stuff is very difficult to remove once allowed in. Good, illegal air
nozzles with 125 to 200+ psi might be needed. OSHA has zero tolerance
for that sort of thing.
