Not a vfd Ed, but for lessor horsepowers, up to a horse or so, there is 
the Pico pwm-servo amp, which uses the signal from a pwmgen to control 
it. I'm using 2 of them to run a pair of one hp spindle motors. Its 
perhaps 1% of the size of the power supply, good for up to 20 amps at 
160 volts.  Runs a 90 volt motor from a 125 volt dc supply without 
straining a thing.
