Blued steel carton strapping is about what it should look like and its
about the right thickness, but that stuff is pretty soft, and I doubt it
could be hardened enough to make this.

McMaster Carr has what you need. Blue temper spring steel. Now I gotta
find the time to do mine.
What size you need? I have 25 ft of .016 x 1/2 1095 blue temper. Can
mail some.
