I have my ELS that has a serial port or can have a CAN driver installed in place of the X axis STEP/DIR. Lots of buttons to make a control panel and I've also installed a larger LCD display on some units. The encoder knob works well for simple motion. Press the knob down and it increments the step from 0.001 to 0.005 to 0.010 to 0.020 and then around back to 0.001. But in general it's just for tweaking position. The arrow motion keys are used for normal motion. It's currently connected to the knee Gecko Drive which can't handle more than 10,000 steps per second before the motor locks up.
In either case I'd somehow have to link that into LinuxCNC and that's beyond me at the moment and would take away from all the other projects. I really like the ShuttleXpress. But not enough buttons. The expanded Shuttle would be better. But I think I'll try this one from China first to get a feel how others are doing it.
