#28 has 10 times the resistance per foot of #18 and this has 10 times
the resistance of #8.     It is not a coincidence.  A difference in 10
AWG is a factor of 10 cross-section area.
If you had used #28 wire on a 20 foot run the voltage drop (over the
40 foot 2-way length) would have been 1.3 volts at 0.5 amps.  But now
with #18 the drop is 0.13 volts.
