Looks neat Dave, like it would possibly be a replacement for the Omron 
encoder I put on the rear of my spindle motor a couple years back, for 
when the bearings in the Omron finally fail.  Having no bearings, rotor 
guided by the motor would be one way to improve the longevity of such a 
lashup.

Whats the approximate cost? I got the 1000 line Omron, with differential 
outputs for A/B/Z off fleabay for around $26 with ship. Because it has 
its own bearings, which are still working like new, but I've been 
thinking what happens when they fail. Contingency plans IOW.
