It's often easier to hand write code for simpler jobs or use the machine in a mix of manual and MDI. It is well worth adding a couple of electronic handwheels. You end up with the hands on feel of a manual with the power of a CNC. Andy's macros look awesome. I must give them a try.

For more complex stuff CAM is the only practical solution. I do quite a bit of curvy decorative work and it would be a nightmare to hand code. There aren't many decent lathe CAM packages out there that don't involve getting a mortgage. Fusion is pretty impressive though you need Windows/Mac to run it.
