The Machinekit people did this a few years ago.
They used an FPGA development board that
had an ARM core, and split the codebase into
hal and non-hal parts.  It looked to be nice work.
Such a pity that their talent got diverted from
the main LinuxCNC development group.  They
are down to only a few developers now I think.

Is the FPGA big enuf for  HostMot2? ...and after one puts in the
development and testing work is there an ongoing board so significant
number of users can take advantage of the work?
If the answers are yes then that would be a slick approach.
Or does one buy a bunch of the boards now; while the supply lasts and
gamble on the outcome?
