I would like to add our congratulations on reviving the end-violence list
server. It was one of the most interesting and useful list servers

I would also like to second Irma Saucedo's request for more cross-regional
exchanges. This week I attended a regional meeting of the Mekong Basin
countries Cambodia, Lao, Thailand and Vietnam on domestic violence
legislation. The discussion turned to how to lobby effectively for
domestic violence legislation with male parliamentarians who often argue
against it on the grounds that it will break up families. A consultant
from GTZ mentioned that Austria has extensive data showing that early
intervention in families experiencing domestic violence, and particularly
the compulsory removal of the perpetrator from the family home for a short
period actually reduces the proportion of family breakdowns. A resource
person from Malaysia also reported that women's groups there had also used
data showing that interventions based on domestic violence legislation
helped to preserve rather than break up families. Such exchanges of
experience are invaluable in helping countries that are just starting to
develop specific interventions. I think that North-South exchanges would
be especially valuable, and particularly exchanges with non-English
speaking countries.

We tend to have better access through the Web and the general literature to
the experience of English-speaking countries, but that of many European
countries such as Austria is obscured due to the language barrier. It
would be great if English-speakers in those countries could make a special
effort to present their experiences for the rest of us to share and learn from.

Warmest regards,
