support the call for regional exchanges.  In this vein I would like to
inform you that Australia is hosting a international conference on 18-22
February 2002 about the diversity of perspectives and experiences of
violence against women.  The major focus of the conference is on the
Asia-Pacific Region with key speakers and presenters from Fiji, Cambodia,
China, the Philippines, Aotearoa (NZ), Canada, UK, India and of course
speakers from indigenous and non-indigenous Australia.

About The Conference
====================

The conference is aimed at increasing understandings of the
complexities of violence against women, and extending the repertoire
of responses to this violence. Meanings, cultures and difference will
be the overarching themes of all presentations at the conference. The
conference will offer the opportunity to reflect on what is shared by
women internationally as we strive to challenge the violence we
experience. There will be a particular focus on the Asia-Pacific
region.


Topics include

� The cultural constructions of violence
� The intersection of gender with other categories of identity such
as race, ethnicity, age, sexuality
� Trafficking in women and girls
� Violence prevention
� Masculinities and violence
� Changing cultures of practice
� International responses to challenging violence
� The diversity of approaches to challenging violence
� Region specific strategies against violence


The first three days of the conference Monday 18th to Wednesday 20th
will include keynote addresses, plenary panels, roundtable
discussions and concurrent papers and workshops. Thursday 21st will
include a showcase of projects and workshops. On Friday there will be
visits to agencies and projects.
