Great blog post Christian. I completely agree that people(or new contributors) take a threshold of time and contributions to the realize the scale of GNOME; And that they are part of something bigger. I think this aspect should be clearly spoken out and let the existing/future contributors know that it's serves as a career-accelerator and long-term skill building.
So, based on categorization in your post, I think there is lot of scope to improve this : https://www.gnome.org/get-involved/ Ironing out few more specific details about these roles and how it applies to GNOME will be great addition to the get-involved page.
