yes, messages I start composing myself seem to work fine, too, independent of
the charset.

enigmail involved here - or was it composed using enigmail?

If there's a qp-encoded char *in* the armor, that's something different. This is
an error, but one that arose from either the composing MUA or one of the MTAs.
Never seen such a message / error. Is that reproducable? But again: in my eyes
this is independent of http://sourceforge.net/p/enigmail/bugs/106/
