I just installed enigmail to see if it's still as awful as I remember it being. I went through the wizard, which specifically asked me if I wanted to change my Thunderbird settings, and I said "no". I sent one message in HTML, and enigmail complained that HTML emails can't be encrypted. I then uninstalled enigmail. Now all my email has been turned into ASCII! Critically, all the inline images have disappeared.
Restarting Thunderbird didn't fix it, and I couldn't find any preference saying "display all HTML messages as some kind of half-arsed wiki markup with no images".
