You're doing nothing wrong, you yet haven't done all what is necessary to communicate really secure. You must be sure that the keys of your mail partners really belong to them, i.e. ensuring their validity. Please refer to the handbook https://www.enigmail.net/documentation/Enigmail_Handbook_1.0.0_en.pdf, section 7.7, page 39. There is also a lot of other good stuff out in the net, please search for "web of trust". Please do not mix "Validity" with "Owner trust", these are different things.
