Well, your description sounds very much like

If it was this one, clicking on "Continue" would have resulted in
correct behaviour. And if it was, there's nothing we as Enigmail could
do concerning this behaviour. Better documented or clearer code would
not help. It simply boils down to the way enigmail can work within
Thunderbird and calling the underlying GnuPG which sometimes takes a
while, which can be several ten seconds, depending on the operations it
performs.

The only thing we actually can do is document this behaviour in our
handbook and the FAQ (note to self). So your report actually will lead
to some improvement.

My general advice on this: Do not start using encryption at the very
moment where you depend on it. Start as soon as possible and train
yourself, get experience. There will be errors and failures in the
beginning, such as the bad experience you had when teaching a newbie.
