Thank you very much, Ludwig, for providing this overview. I'll spread the word as soon as possible.
It seems that Patrick's package is the best solution because it is all free software. GPGTools has gone commercial and pay-only since last autumn when they began to develop a new version for OS X Yosemite. I have, however, engineered an old version of GPGTools for Mavericks in the meanwhile and installed this for testing only to get a Mac-specific pinentry, and it works nicely with the latest Thunderbird/Enigmail under Mavericks. I'll give Patrick's package a try later when I have more time for testing, I did not know about it earlier. MacPorts does not provide a native pinentry for Mac, and the solution you've linked to is not the latest version 0.9. Hm. To give you some idea about my background: I would describe myself as an experienced user. I employed GnuPG a long time ago on Win98SE all self-compiled in Emacs/Gnus before I switched to the Mac, and at the time it was easy to configure and it just worked fine. I then lacked the opportunity to use it because hardly anyone around myself was using encryption. Now that more and more people have started using mail encryption after the NSA/Snowden scandal I turned back to it again, trying to get it working on my present 10.9.5 system. Due to your recent announcement to drop support for GPG1, I started out with GPG2 from MacPorts. It took me two days to find out why it did not work properly. Then I found this present discussion on the list. The gpg-agent/pinentry issue that has been discussed so often already, to my mind is failed by design. It even makes trouble in Emacs/Gnus: http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/EasyPG#toc4 However, this problem goes back to a decision taken by the GnuPG project as it is them deciding on the whole design. So, thanks to Patrick for providing his package on Sourceforge, making GnuPG available to Mac users as all free software. In fact, it makes me feel scared to realise that data security in the end depends on more or less a handful of volunteer developers only. I am quite grateful for your effort. This is so important an issue. I wonder whether we should set up a foundation or an endowment providing long-term support to keep encryption available for all major platforms for free and as free software. Thank you all, and have a nice weekend, Jürgen. 2015-02-14 11:51 GMT+01:00 Ludwig Hügelschäfer <[email protected]>: > -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- > Hash: SHA512 > > On 14.02.15 03:04, Ian Mann wrote: >> http://muddledramblings.com/macgpg2-step-by-step/ > > This page sees to be outdated. > > If you want to have a working GnuPG package on Mac OS X, there are the > following ways: > > 1.
