It avoids one of my pet peeves: you only get Enigmail information on a
signed or encrypted email. This has led to some newbie confusion in the
past: "I just installed Enigmail, and when I click on an email I don't
see anything different. Did Enigmail install correctly?"

I'm thinking states of "Present", "Stripped", and "Unsigned". If a
PGP/MIME message has no signature attachment, Enigmail should report
that as a stripped message: the sender thought it was worth putting a
signature on, but the signature wasn't attached to the message -- this
seems like something we should communicate to the user.

Confidence states would be "Green", "Yellow", "Red". We could use a
stoplight icon, really. Green means "the message integrity is assured,
and the sender positively identified." Yellow means "the message
integrity is assured, but the sender is not identified." Red means
"something is wrong here, boss."

In fact... hell. Let's strip it down even further. Let's imagine an
Enigmail that gives only a red-light, yellow-light, or green-light. If
it's green, Enigmail's telling you integrity is assured and sender
identified. Yellow means something may be amiss (click for more
details), and red is something's definitely amiss (click for more details).

... You know, I like this three-state idea. Red light, yellow light,
green light is pretty much universally understood. And really, all the
information we want to convey to the user is whether we can prove
nothing's wrong with the message, whether there might be something wrong
with the message, or whether we're sure something's wrong with the
message -- which map cleanly onto green, yellow, and red. :)
